Provide focus and direction for new hires by identifying some priorities the first day on the job. Document two or three things the new employee needs to learn—skills to master, information to acquire, equipment to use properly—and discuss these with the individual. Important: Ask if the person has any concerns about achieving your priorities. Get these concerns out in the open to address them constructively without wasting your employee’s time and your own.
